This week, the 34th World Cheese Awards was held at the International Conference Centre in Newport, Wales. A record-breaking 4,434 cheeses from around the globe were entered into the competition to be judged by seasoned cheese experts. Each year, World Cheese Award judges hand select the World's Best Cheese. Winning this prestigious award is no small feat.
According to The Guild of Fine Foods' website, judges work in teams of three and evaluate each cheese by "[looking] at the rind and the body of the cheese, its color, texture, consistency and, above all, its taste." Each group nominate one exceptional cheese for the "Super Gold" award. These selected cheeses are then judged for a second time by the "Super Jury" of cheese experts who determine which cheeses will move to the final round of judging. The Super Jury members then choose the World Champion cheese on live television.
It was announced on November 2nd that Le Gruyère AOP surchoix, entered by Swiss
cheesemaker Vorderfultigen and affineur Gourmino received the highest number of votes and therefore was crowned the World's Best Cheese for 2022!
"This Le Gruyère AOP surchoix is a matured cheese made from raw cow’s milk which is full-bodied with a slightly crumbly texture. It was described as a “really perfect handcrafted cheese, smooth in your mouth and melting on your tongue” by the Super Jury member Christian Zuercher from Mifroma", states the press release.
