Would You Drink Beer Made From Used Shower Water?

This company is using wastewater to brew beer to "showcase the untapped potential of water reuse"!

Pouring beer from a tap.

Epic Cleantec is an environmental organization located in San Francisco. They offer "end-to-end service for the design, engineering, permitting, installation, and ongoing operations of onsite water reuse systems."

When the company learned that the Greenbuild sustainable building conference was being hosted in their own city of San Francisco, they came up with an out-of-this-world idea to advance the water conversation on a large stage: brewing beer with purified wastewater from a high-rise residential building!

The wastewater used to make the beer comes from household activities like laundry, dishes, showers, and sinks. But, is it safe and sanitary to consume beer made with wastewater? Epic Cleantec answered this valid concern on their website, stating, "The short answer is that with advanced treatment technologies, recycled water is not only safe to drink, but is often even cleaner than many sources of water we commonly consume...the water is treated to an extremely high level of purity that meets (or even exceeds) federal drinking water quality standards."

By the end of October 2022, the Epic OneWater Brew cans were completed! The video below shows the making of this unconventional beer.
