May 2024 – Vancouver, Canada
The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) proudly hosted its premier event, the 41st World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress, in the vibrant city of Vancouver from May 8-10, 2024. Bringing together over 1,200 professionals from more than 60 countries, the congress served as a pivotal forum for sharing insights and strategies that are shaping the future of the nut and dried fruit industry.
Throughout the event, experts convened at round tables to discuss crucial industry trends. Notably, the forecast for the 2024/25 world tree nut production is set to reach an impressive 6.2 million metric tons (kernel basis, with pistachios measured in-shell), marking an 8% increase from the previous season. Significant production increases are anticipated for pine nuts (up 76%), almonds (up 22%), and hazelnuts (up 20%). Other nuts such as macadamias, pistachios, Brazil nuts, and walnuts are expected to see moderate growth ranging from 2% to 8%. Early estimates for the 2024/25 peanut production suggest a yield of around 50 million MT (in-shell basis), while dried fruit production is projected to rise by 4%, reaching 3.4 million MT.
Key themes of resilience, readiness for emerging challenges, and strategic marketing were prevalent throughout the congress. INC Executive Director Goretti Guasch emphasized the potential to boost global demand for nuts and dried fruits by tapping into consumer behavior.
Highlighting the congress were impactful keynote addresses from industry leaders. Marc Low, KPMG Canada's Director of Innovation & Emerging Technology, delved into the revolutionary effects of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Professor Janice Gross Stein from the University of Toronto examined the implications of a polarized world and offered guidance on mitigating these challenges for business leaders.
