Get Ready to Play Veggie Secret Agent!

Every year, on August 8th, an unusual and amusing tradition takes place in neighborhoods across the United States: "Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch" Day! This lighthearted holiday celebrates the abundance of zucchini during the summer harvest season and encourages neighbors to share their surplus zucchinis with a playful and neighborly twist. As gardens burst with an abundance of this versatile and nutritious vegetable, many people are looking to offload their surplus squash. What better way to do so than to share with your neighbors?

Green zucchini squash.

The origins of National "Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor's Porch" Day can be traced back to the creative mind of Thomas Roy of Mount Gretna, Pennsylvania, a man with a sense of humor and a bountiful zucchini harvest. Zucchini plants often produce more fruit than families could possibly consume. As a result, gardeners are left with a surplus of zucchinis that they struggle to use. Roy, seeking a humorous solution to this "zucchini overload," declared August 8th as a day for neighbors to discreetly share their excess zucchinis with one another. What started as a small-scale joke eventually gained momentum and evolved into the quirky and endearing holiday celebrated today!
