Honey Onion Cough Syrup

Next time you're sick, skip the Dayquil and try a natural remedy: honey and onion cough syrup!

Glass jars of honey and red onion slices.

Onion and honey are both natural expectorants, which are chemicals that help clear phlegm or mucus from the respiratory tract. In addition, honey is full of antioxidants and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This remedy has been used for thousands of years to treat common ailments such as cough, cold, and respiratory issues.

Simply peel and thinly slice 2 medium onions and add them to a sauce pan. Pour enough honey to cover the onions into the pan. Cook over low heat until the onions are soft, 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally. Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, and then store in a airtight container. Take 1 teaspoon of the onion-infused honey 3-4 times a day during the duration of your cold or illness.
