Did you know that 900 million pounds of this native North American fruit are harvested annually in the U.S. alone?

Native Americans have been using cranberries way before European settlers arrived. They not only ate cranberries, but used them for dying fabrics and medicinal purposes, such as treating wounds.

Here are six of the best reasons to incorporate cranberries into your diet!

1. Cranberries are chock full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants:

They contain over 15 beneficial vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, B-1, B-3, B-6, C, E, and K. In addition, they contain protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, sodium, and phosphorous.

2. Studies have shown that cranberries can prevent some long-term illnesses:

They can slow down the long-term effects of some illnesses, for example, slowing down the growth of cancerous cells. They’re also beneficial for slowing down age related issues such as memory loss and skin damage.

3. Cranberries are a great source for decreasing blood pressure:

If they are eaten regularly, cranberries can reduce your high blood pressure and risk of developing cardiovascular disease. They can also regulate your blood sugar and levels of HDL (also called “good” cholesterol” which lowers your risk of heart disease and stroke.)

4. Cranberries can help with certain allergies and reducing inflammation:

By consuming cranberries you can reduce the outcome of an allergic reaction in the future. They’re also good for your digestion and reducing inflammation in your gut.

5. Cranberries are also known for managing urinary tract infections (UTIs):

They contain a compound called proanthocyanidins which prevents bacteria from attaching to the inner surface of the bladder and urinary tract causing infections.

6. Cranberries are great for your hair and skin:

Using cranberry infused beauty products can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles while also promoting the growth of healthy hair. They can also be used to treat split ends and make your hair look shiny and healthy.
