Since the first German Oktoberfest celebration in 1810, the tradition has slowly spread to the United States. Today, the festival is best known for its beer offerings and eats such as soft pretzels, sauerkraut and sausages, but the festival wasn't always based around these things.
The first Oktoberfest was held on October 12, 1810 in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, when Prince Ludwig married Princess Teresa of Sassonia-Hildburghausen. All of the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate in the fields in front of the city gate to celebrate the marriage. The celebration included a horserace and feast, and was the very first Oktoberfest.
Although massive amounts of beer were consumed at the first Oktoberfest, the event was based around its horse race and agricultural show. It wasn’t until 1818 that beer began to be heavily associated with Oktoberfest. On the festival's 100th anniversary in 1910, a whopping 120,000 liters of beer was consumed!
The first United States Oktoberfest was held on October 13, 14, and 15, 1961 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
