Ever dreamt of eating underwater while fish swim past you? No aquarium gimmicks here—Norway is home to Under, a Michelin-starred restaurant where you dine below the Atlantic Ocean. Think “The Little Mermaid” meets fine dining, minus the singing crabs (though staff have been known to name some of the regular fish).
A View Like No Other
Most of Under is submerged, offering panoramic underwater views that rival snorkeling or a submarine ride. A massive acrylic wall keeps diners dry while marine life swims by, and the thick concrete shell even doubles as a habitat for kelp and limpets. Eco-friendly and awe-inspiring? Check.
Food That Matches the Setting
Gimmicks won’t hide mediocre food, and Under proves it. The seasonal, set menu features 10–12 courses of hyper-local ingredients. Highlights include halibut with yellow berries, scallops with arctic kiwi, and monkfish with white asparagus. Vegetarian? Mushrooms step in without skipping a beat. Lunch offers a smaller, slightly more budget-friendly menu of five to six courses. Dinner starts at $225, with wine pairings adding nearly $200—or $125 for a nonalcoholic juice pairing.
Plan Ahead
Reservations can take up to six months, but it’s worth it. After all, Under literally means “Wonder” in Norwegian, and every detail—from the submerged design to the inventive menu—is built to spark awe.
If your bucket list includes eating while a school of cod glides past your plate, this is your spot. Just bring a jacket—the Atlantic isn’t exactly tropical.
