Tired of Wasting Avocado Halves? This Trick Changes Everything

Forget the lemon juice—this trick keeps your avo green with less mess.

Keeping a cut avocado green is one of those everyday kitchen frustrations. You’ve probably tried lemon juice, plastic wrap, or even the freezer—each with mixed results. They help a little, but let’s be honest: that fresh, vibrant green tends to fade fast.

The reason is simple: oxygen. Once an avocado is exposed to air, oxidation kicks in and the flesh starts browning. And unfortunately, once the peel comes off, most methods don’t offer much protection.

But a clever TikTok trick is flipping the script—by rethinking how we cut the avocado in the first place.

The Hack: Cut Off the Top, Not in Half

Instead of slicing the avocado lengthwise and removing the pit, TikTok user @mikey_bee99 suggests cutting off just the top of the avocado. This keeps the rest of the fruit sealed in its natural peel. You can then scoop out what you need from the top, using the rest later.

It’s a smart way to minimize how much flesh is exposed to air. Since the peel acts as a natural barrier, leaving most of it intact significantly slows browning.

How to Store It

After using what you need, store the avocado cut-side down on a plate in the fridge. This helps reduce exposure to oxygen and keeps the remaining flesh fresher longer. You can also combine this method with other tricks like a silicone food cover or light wrap, if you’d like extra protection.

One Drawback: The Pit

This method does come with one small challenge: the pit. It can make scooping a bit trickier than usual. But for anyone who tends to use only a portion of an avocado at a time, it’s easy enough to work around. When you’re ready to use the rest, just cut the avocado open as usual.

___

This TikTok trick is surprisingly effective and doesn’t require any special tools or prep—just a small change in how you cut your avocado. If you’re tired of tossing browned halves, it’s definitely worth a try.
